4 Tips for Reentering the Workforce
Whatever your reason: education, staying at home with kids, or studying abroad, reentering the workforce can be difficult. And in an incredibly competitive job market, any perceived negative can make it challenging to find work.
Get your career back on track.
Reentering the workforce is a challenge, but not an insurmountable one. Here are four tips to help you successfully restart your career:
- Start planning before you take the plunge. If you are about to graduate, or you’ve just decide to reenter the workforce, start developing relevant experience now, and planning for your reentry. If you’ve been a stay-at-home parent, perhaps you could offer to volunteer with a local non-profit to gain recent, hands-on experience. If you’re a student nearing graduation, it might be time to look for an internship or mentoring opportunity.
- Use a functional resume, not chronological. If you haven’t been in the workforce for awhile, a chronological resume can make you seem like a dinosaur, career-wise. Focus on your relevant experience and accomplishments, and don’t forget about the recent skills you gained in tip #1.
- Bone up on your interviewing skills. You might feel a little rusty, but don’t be sheepish about returning to the workforce. You might feel like the odds are stacked against you, but you should shine with confidence and ability during your interviews. This is your opportunity to sell your skills to a prospective employer, don’t waste the opportunity!
- Partner with an employment agency. When you work with an employment agency, a dedicated recruiter will work with you to polish your resume and effectively sell your skills and experience. You’ll gain a career ally who will “sell” your background to potential employers. Whether you start off with temporary opportunities to build your recent experience, or you go right for permanent opportunities, an employment agency can help you successfully transition back into the workforce.
