What Should You Wear to an Interview

 

It may sound superficial, but there’s no denying that job candidates are judged heavily on the clothing they wear to an interview. Recruiters will make an instant assessment about you based on what you’re wearing, which is why you need to be selective about your interview clothing. Here are some guidelines to follow to ensure that you’re dressed to impress for a manufacturing position.

Do I Need to Wear a Suit?

Generally speaking, a suit isn’t necessary for this type of job interview and would be considered as overkill. Unless you’re applying for a high profile position in upper management, it’s not usually recommended to wear a suit because you’re likely to come across as being overdressed. Instead, you’re better off going for a look that’s a bit more casual yet still professional.

Appropriate Interview Clothing for Men

The ideal wardrobe for a manufacturing interview consists of the following:

  • Khakis or slacks
  • A long sleeved, collared, button up shirt
  • A tie
  • Dress shoes

You may also want to go the extra mile and wear a blazer because this will give you a nice, polished look that’s highly professional. In some cases, it may be sufficient to opt for a short-sleeved polo style shirt as long as there are no obnoxiously large logos on it.

For Women

Here’s what tends to work best.

  • A knee-length or longer skirt or dress pants
  • A plain, conservative blouse
  • Dress shoes

What to Avoid

It should go without saying, but you should always avoid wearing any clothing that’s tattered, torn, stained or dirtied in any way. This can be an immediate disqualifier in the eyes of an interviewer. Stay away from wearing excessively bright colors or anything that could be considered as gaudy. Instead, you’re better off sticking with neutral tones.

Your hair should be neatly styled, and men should either be clean shaven or have facial hair freshly groomed. For those with long hair, it should be pulled back in either a ponytail or bun. As for jewelry and other types of accessories, these should be kept to a minimum. Earrings are usually acceptable, but any other type of facial piercings should be removed. Finally, hats should never be worn to an interview either.

Wearing the right interview clothing is a critical first step for getting your foot in the door and gaining the respect of your recruiter. By following these guidelines, you should be dressed appropriately and give yourself the best possible chance of having a successful interview.
