Desperate to Find a Job? Don’t Panic!

When you’ve been searching for a job for some time and you haven’t been able to land many interviews, it’s only natural to start feeling depressed and a little desperate. However, once you begin feeling that way, you’re going to end up broadcasting this to your interviewers and desperation and panic are the last things they want to feel from you.

Instead of getting panicked, it’s time to take a hard look at your job search and make sure you’re looking for the right kind of job, with the right kind of company. Let’s take a look at a few constructive things you can do when your job search keeps coming up dry.

1. Don’t focus too hard on your search. If you’re unemployed, chances are you have a lot of time on your hands and you’re using most of it to search and apply for jobs. However, this can actually feed your desperation, especially on days when you’re not finding anything new and it appears pretty hopeless. Set limits to your job searching time, and get out of the house when you’re not actively searching. Try volunteering and don’t forget to start attending networking events. These activities may actually be more fruitful for your job search than sitting on the couch endlessly looking for job postings.

2. Don’t succumb to a negative mindset. If you program yourself that “I’m not going to get this job anyway, so why try?” you’re setting yourself up to fail. Work on maintaining a positive mind-set and remember to surround yourself with positive people. It’s not always easy to stay positive, but it is rewarding. Plus, interviewers can sense whether or not they’re dealing with a positive, up-beat person during a job interview and this is definitely the vibe you want to give.

3. Take a reality check. Are you not getting the jobs you’re applying for because they aren’t the right job for your skill level? It’s important to be realistic, especially when you’re unemployed. Expand your horizons a little and think outside of your box. You may be able to lateral to a career that’s actually more satisfying and rewarding for you.

4. Be pro-active in your search. If you’re not having much luck in your job search, it may be time to get some professional help. Get in touch with recruiters and send your resume off to temporary staffing firms. You’ll be able to actually work, add to your existing skill-sets and you may even end up being able to take a temporary job to a full-time position if your employer likes your work.

There’s always hope and there’s always a job out there for you. Stay positive and you will land the job you really want.
