Although the holiday season is a joyous time of year, it can be quite stressful for employers. With many people traveling, preparing for festivities and so on, you may find that some of your employees “mentally check out” for a couple of weeks. Of course this is problematic because it naturally reduces engagement, which hurts productivity, profitability, etc. So how can you keep your employees engaged during the holidays? Here are some tips.
Show Your Appreciation
What better time to express your gratitude to your employees than the holidays? One of the most effective ways to keep your staff on track is to celebrate their successes and show them how much you appreciate all of their hard work. You can do this in a variety of ways, but one of the best is to offer some type of gift along with a handwritten card. It doesn’t have to be anything over the top, and even a $20 gift card can do wonders for morale and get your employees to give their maximum effort.
Create Individual and Group Goals
Sometimes people need a little extra push to stay motivated during this time of year. An effective way to keep things on course is to create ambitious yet achievable goals both for individuals and collectively for your entire staff. For instance, you might congratulate your employees for their outstanding performance during the year but encourage them to push just a little bit harder to end the year on a high note. Just make sure that the goals you choose are clear and measurable.
Give Them Some Time Off
Everyone needs a little time to get away from the workplace and recharge their batteries. If your employees are suffering from stress and burnout, it’s going to kill their engagement level. You can eliminate or at least alleviate this issue by encouraging them to take time off to spend with family and friends.
While Christmas and New Years are essentially givens for days off, you may want to offer some additional time off as well (e.g. December 24 – 26). If you need help covering the workload, you can always hire temp workers throughout the holiday season as well. Partnering with a staffing agency will ensure that you get skilled and talented workers that mesh with your company’s vision.
Just because it’s the holidays doesn’t mean that employee engagement has to take a hit. By implementing the right strategies, you can still get the best from your employees even during this highly distracting time.
