Job seekers all have one thing in common — they want to know how to quickly land the job they really want. Most of us focus on things like creating a professional resume, agonizing over our cover letters, working on our interviewing skills and making sure we are dressed for success. All of these components are important, but it may not be the key ingredient to land that job.

First, you need to focus on the companies that are perfect fits for you and your skill set. Look for companies that have corporate cultures that mesh with your own core beliefs and personal likes. This will help ensure that you are targeting the companies that you’ll want to be with for the long term and the companies that will give you the best chance for success.

Now, you’ll need to find out what their current problem is when it comes to hiring for your position. Every company has an issue

that they would like to solve by hiring the right person. Just as with consumers where you want to be the solution to their problems, the same holds true in your job search. So, how do you find out this information?

Your first step is to research the company thoroughly and read through related news and their company website. They’re not going to come right out and broadcast what their problem is, but by carefully digesting news about them, you can come to a better conclusion of how to solve their problem. The next step is to speak to the hiring manager, and if possible, schedule an informational interview. This type of interview allows you to ask questions and will help you determine whether or not you’re a good fit. In fact, if the company isn’t hiring right now, if you impress the hiring manager during your informational interview, chances are they’ll be willing to give you a referral.

Once you’ve got the information you need, you will know how to present yourself during the interview process. Work out a way that you can be a solution to their problem and work this information into your interview. Even if the hiring manager doesn’t overtly react to what you’re saying — they’re listening and they will most likely like what they are hearing.
